During its regular meeting held today under the chairmanship of Professor Mohamed Hussein, President of Tanta University, the University Council reviewed a comprehensive report on the energy conservation measures and consumption monitoring initiatives implemented across the university’s faculties and facilities over the past period. These efforts were undertaken in accordance with the directives of the Cabinet and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, which emphasize the adoption of national energy-efficiency policies and the promotion of environmental sustainability across university campuses.
The report revealed remarkable and unexpected success, demonstrating a 38% reduction in the university’s electricity consumption rate—an achievement that surpassed all previously established targets and expectations.

In this context, Professor Mohamed Hussein, President of the University, expressed his sincere appreciation and gratitude to Mr. Ahmed Rashad, Secretary-General of the University, and to all members of the Engineering Administration team. He commended their outstanding technical expertise and continuous efforts throughout the implementation period, which played a pivotal role in achieving this tangible accomplishment.
The University President explained that this success was the result of a high level of administrative and technical coordination. The university’s efforts focused on several key areas, including medium- and long-term measures. At the strategic level, these initiatives include the gradual replacement of conventional lighting systems with energy-efficient LED technology supported by smart motion sensors in lecture halls and corridors, as well as expanding the utilization of building rooftops for the installation of solar panels and solar water-heating systems, particularly in student residences and university hospitals. The university also aims to establish charging stations for electric vehicles and progressively transition its transportation fleet to operate on clean energy sources, thereby supporting the development of a smart and sustainable infrastructure.
Professor Mohamed Hussein further noted that achieving a 38% reduction in energy consumption represents an exceptional accomplishment that reflects Tanta University’s genuine commitment to its national responsibility in supporting the state's energy conservation strategy and environmental sustainability goals. He emphasized that this result, which exceeded expectations, would not have been possible without meticulous planning and the dedicated technical efforts undertaken by the Engineering Administration in cooperation with the University’s General Secretariat. He also reaffirmed the university’s commitment to adopting innovative and intelligent solutions to preserve its resources and highlighted that this achievement serves as a strong incentive for launching further initiatives that benefit society and support Egypt’s Vision for Sustainable Development.
