    Prof. Dr. Mohamed Hussein, President of Tanta University, announced the university’s results in the UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings 2026. Tanta University ranked 589th globally among 2,016 higher education institutions from 110 countries in the seventeenth edition of the international ranking, which specializes in assessing the sustainability performance of higher education institutions.

    At the regional and national levels, Tanta University ranked 18th in Africa among 127 universities and 14th among 47 participating Egyptian universities. The university’s overall score also increased from 6,575 points to 6,737.5 points out of 10,000, representing an increase of 162.5 points.

    Prof. Dr. Mohamed Hussein emphasized that the university’s improved score reflects tangible progress in its sustainability framework and the integrated efforts undertaken by the university’s various sectors, faculties, and units to embed sustainability principles within institutional practices. He explained that the university views sustainability as an integrated pathway closely linked to management quality, efficient resource utilization, institutional infrastructure development, digital transformation, and the adoption of responsible environmental practices.

    The President of Tanta University further noted that the expanded participation in the ranking, which now encompasses more than 2,000 educational institutions from 110 countries, reflects the growing international competition in the field of university sustainability. He affirmed that the university will continue to develop its policies, programs, and initiatives in ways that strengthen its competitiveness and consolidate its presence at the local, regional, and international levels, in alignment with Egypt Vision 2030 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

    For his part, Prof. Dr. Mahmoud Selim, Acting Vice President of Tanta University for Community Service and Environmental Development, affirmed that the university is pursuing a vision aimed at integrating sustainability into its various activities and practices. This includes improving resource-use efficiency, enhancing environmental performance, supporting green initiatives, and promoting the participation of students, faculty members, and staff in efforts to achieve sustainable development.

     He explained that the addition of this criterion reflects the global shift toward linking sustainability with institutional governance efficiency and digital transformation. Tanta University is supporting this direction by developing management and monitoring systems, leveraging information and communication technologies, promoting transparency and integrity, and strengthening the integration of environmental, institutional, and digital dimensions in managing sustainability-related initiatives.

   It is noteworthy that the 2026 edition of the ranking introduced a significant methodological development through the addition of a new Governance and Digitalization criterion. The assessment is now based on seven main criteria: Setting and Infrastructure; Energy and Climate Change; Waste; Water; Transportation; Education and Research; and Governance and Digitalization.

    The UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings is one of the leading international rankings specializing in measuring and evaluating universities’ sustainability efforts. It was launched by the Universitas Indonesia in 2010. The 2026 edition was conducted under the theme “Advancing Sustainable Campuses through Governance, Digitalization, and Integrated Performance,” underscoring the importance of governance, digitalization, and integrated performance in building more sustainable universities capable of addressing future challenges.
