Prof. Mahmoud Zaki, “Establishment of Solar-Powered Desalination Unit with International Specifications at Faculty of Engineering”

Prof. Mahmoud Zaki, Tanta University President, announced installation and operation of water desalination unit with a capacity of 25 m3 /day according to the latest technology and international specifications in the context of carrying out the joint research project between Faculty of Engineering at the university and Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China. The project is entitled “A Basic and Applied Study of a Solar-Powered Water Desalination Unit Using Nanometric Materials” and is financed by Science and Technology Development Fund (STDF) in the framework of Egypt’s strategy 2030 as for more water desalination and more use of solar energy.

Prof. Abdel Nabi Kabeel, Professor of New and Renewable Energy at Faculty of Engineering at Tanta University and the main researcher of the project, declared that the unit uses solar heaters to increase the temperature of water.

He added that the unit is equipped with solar power plates that have batteries to get the electric current needed for operating the unit all morning hours, and that nanometric materials are used to raise the efficiency of the unit. He stated that the unit can desalinate water with different salt concentrations based on the source of water whether brackish water or sea water.
