Professor Mohamed Hussein, President of Tanta University, announced the university’s inclusion across all United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), while maintaining its global standing in the Times Higher Education Sustainability Impact Rankings 2026. The university retained its position in the 601–800 global band out of 1,603 ranked universities worldwide, and ranked in the fifth category locally among 45 Egyptian universities included in the ranking.
The University President affirmed that this achievement reflects the continuous efforts exerted by Tanta University to enhance sustainability across its academic, research, and community activities, expand international cooperation, and support innovation and social responsibility. These efforts strengthen its position among leading regional and international universities in the field of sustainability and the achievement of the SDGs. He noted that the ranking results demonstrated outstanding success, with the university appearing and being ranked across all seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This reflects the comprehensiveness and integration of the university’s efforts in environmental, social, and economic sustainability, and confirms its institutional commitment to embedding these principles within the education, research, innovation, and community service system, in line with the United Nations goals and Egypt Vision 2030.
Prof. Mohamed Hussein extended his sincere appreciation and gratitude to all sectors and faculties, as well as faculty members, researchers, and the University International Ranking Center, praising their dedicated efforts in preparing and documenting ranking submissions and their professional handling of international data and reports. These efforts directly contributed to achieving this institutional distinction and maintaining Tanta University’s prominent global standing.
He added that the university achieved progress in 11 Sustainable Development Goals compared to the previous year. It advanced to the 301–400 global band in SDG1 (No Poverty), compared to 401–600 in the previous year. It also reached the 401–600 band globally in SDG4 (Quality Education) and SDG5 (Gender Equality), compared to 1001–1500 and 801–1000 respectively in the previous results.
The university also improved its performance in SDG8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), reaching the 301–400 global band, and in SDG9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), reaching the 201–300 band. It further advanced in SDG10 (Reduced Inequalities) and SDG11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), both to the 301–400 band. In addition, it reached the 201–300 band in SDG12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and the 301–400 band in SDG13 (Climate Action). It also progressed in SDG14 (Life Below Water) to the 101–200 band, and SDG15 (Life on Land) to the 201–300 band.
The university further maintained its strong performance in several key goals, ranking in the 101–200 global band in SDG7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) among 892 participating universities. It also maintained its position in the 201–300 band in both SDG2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), as well as the 401–600 band in SDG3 (Good Health and Well-being), and the 301–400 band in SDG6 (Clean Water and Sanitation).
It is worth noting that SDG17 (Partnerships for the Goals) is one of the core pillars of the ranking methodology, accounting for 22% of the overall score weight, while the highest three SDGs achieved by each university are each weighted at 26%. Tanta University ranked in the 1001–1500 global band in this metric among 1,610 participating universities, while continuing to strengthen its local and international partnerships and expand collaboration with academic, research, and development institutions within Egypt and abroad.
The Times Higher Education Sustainability Impact Rankings are the only global rankings that measure universities’ contributions to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Their methodology is based on evaluating universities’ performance in research, teaching, institutional management, and community engagement, as well as their broader societal impact.
