Prof. Mohamed Hussein: The competition translates the Egyptian state's orientations towards environmental sustainability and employing the energies of youth in developing the urban environment and improving the quality of life

Prof. Mohamed Hussein, President of Tanta University, announced that the Faculty of Engineering at the university is organizing a competition «Tanta Green Guide for Sustainable Street Afforestation», with the aim of enhancing environmental awareness among students and providing scientific and applied solutions to develop the urban afforestation system in Tanta city, under the auspices of the University President and the leadership of Prof. Sayed Abdel Azim Al-Ajouz, Vice President of the University for Education and Student Affairs, and Prof. Mahmoud Selim, Acting Vice President of the University for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs, under the supervision of Prof. Ahmed Mohamed Nasr, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, and in coordination with the heads of the relevant scientific departments.

Prof. Mohamed Hussein stressed that the competition comes in line with the Egyptian state's orientations towards achieving sustainable development, expanding green spaces, and improving the quality of the urban environment, in line with the goals of Egypt's Vision 2030, noting that the university pays special attention to developing environmental awareness among young people, consolidating the concept of social responsibility towards preserving natural resources, and encouraging initiatives that contribute to confronting environmental challenges and improving the quality of life in local communities.

The university president added that building true environmental awareness goes beyond theoretical knowledge to give young people the ability to understand environmental problems, analyze their causes, and participate in providing practical solutions to them, stressing that the competition represents a model for the integration of education, scientific research, and community service, by providing the opportunity for students to work alongside faculty members and researchers, and employ academic knowledge in preparing applicable proposals that contribute to improving the urban landscape and enhancing environmental sustainability in the city of Tanta.

Prof. Mohamed Hussein explained that the university seeks, through these initiatives, to enhance its role as an active partner in local development efforts in Gharbia Governorate, and to prepare a generation of graduates who possess the awareness and skills necessary to contribute to building greener, more efficient and sustainable cities, stressing the importance of linking student and research projects to the needs of society and the actual challenges it faces.

For his part, Prof. Ahmed Mohamed Nasr, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, explained that the competition aims to prepare a scientific and applied guide for sustainable afforestation of the streets of Tanta city, based on selecting tree species suitable for the environmental conditions and nature of the streets, determining their planting sites and appropriate distances between them, designing street sectors, and proposing effective irrigation and maintenance systems, in a way that achieves a balance between environmental, urban and aesthetic requirements, and ensures the sustainability of green spaces and maximizes their benefit.

The Dean of the College added that the competition is organized through the Department of Urban Planning and Design, in cooperation with the Department of Architecture and the Environmental Architecture Program, and in coordination with Prof. Shahira Al-Sayed Sharaf Al-Din, Acting Head of the Department of Architecture, and Prof. Marwa Ahmed Qamar Al-Dawla, Acting Head of the Department of Urban Planning and Design, noting that the participating teams include faculty members and members of the auxiliary staff, in addition to student groups ranging in number from four to five students, which enhances collective research work and links academic study with practical application.

The competition includes organizing four specialized workshops during the month of November 2026, addressing the role of urban green cover in achieving sustainability and reducing emissions, mechanisms for developing movement paths, experiences in preparing sustainable street afforestation guides, in addition to smart garbage collection mechanisms and converting waste into energy, with the aim of providing participants with applied knowledge and skills that support the preparation of integrated proposals for sustainable urban development.

According to the announced schedule, registration of participating teams will continue until November 5, 2026. The monitoring, analysis, and study of street problems and afforestation opportunities phase will end on November 12, while December 3, 2026 is set as the date for completing the preparation of the application guide and final proposals.

The competition includes allocating financial prizes for the winning projects, amounting to 6,000 pounds for first place, 5,000 pounds for second place, and 4,000 pounds for third place, to encourage distinguished ideas and motivate participants to provide innovative solutions that support sustainable development efforts.
