Prof. Mohamed Hussein, Tanta University President, announced the convening of the final presentation session of the qualifying stage of the “Best Environmentally Friendly Faculty” Competition for 2025, held under the supervision of Prof. Mahmoud Selim, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, and Prof. Emad Attman, Former Vice President for the Sector and Chair of the Evaluation Committee.
These sessions were dedicated to reviewing the faculties’ efforts in adopting sustainable practices. The results led to the advancement of three faculties to the final stage (in no particular order): the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Pharmacy, and the Faculty of Science. Field visits by the Evaluation Committee are scheduled for Sunday, February 1, to verify all on-ground preparations and select the winning faculty.
The organizing committee explained that the first stage of the competition witnessed strong competition among the University’s faculties, all of which submitted comprehensive technical files that met the specified evaluation criteria and requirements. These files included detailed data on the total areas of green spaces and planted trees within each faculty, the budgets allocated for sustainability efforts and facilities, and the availability of infrastructure specifically designed for persons with disabilities, as well as maternity and childcare facilities.
In addition, the submissions provided evidence of the availability of safe pedestrian pathways and an integrated system to ensure the safety and security of individuals and facilities.
Prof. Mohamed Hussein emphasized that the outcomes of this competition are fully aligned with the objectives of Egypt Vision 2030, noting that the University places great importance on monitoring and evaluating infrastructure- and energy-related programs through information technology. He highlighted the measurement of these programs’ impact on supporting the achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, positioning the University firmly on the path toward comprehensive digital and green transformation.
For his part, Prof. Mahmoud Selim, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, stated that the Community Service Sector adopts clear policies and executable plans to achieve sustainability in line with United Nations goals. He pointed out that the evaluation included precise criteria related to the management of alternative and renewable energy, reliance on energy-efficient equipment, the implementation of policies promoting the use of environmentally friendly vehicles that do not rely on fossil fuels within faculties, and the activation of innovative programs to reduce carbon emissions and greenhouse gases.
Prof. Emad Etman explained that the philosophy behind selecting and weighting the evaluation indicators focused on the comprehensiveness of environmental performance, starting from the treatment of hazardous waste and the recycling of organic and inorganic waste, through to the efficiency of water management and the implementation of conservation and recycling programs. Significant weight was also allocated to environment-related scientific research, as well as the number of academic courses, events, and student activities that support community sustainability issues.
