Prof. Mahmoud Selim Affirms Tanta University’s Enhancement of Sustainable Innovation Within the Institutional Frameworks and the National Strategies

During his inspection visit to Faculty of Agriculture and the “Nabta” project, Prof. Mahmoud Selim, Tanta University Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, asserted the university’s strong commitment to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship through institutional frameworks and national strategies.

Prof. Selim inspected the project’s production stages and listened to an explanation by the team of the project’s objectives and implementation mechanisms. He commended the team’s efforts in providing innovative community solutions. He declared that “Nabta” is a pioneering model of interdisciplinary projects between Agriculture and Engineering, aligned with Egypt’s Vision 2030 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in responsible production, climate action, and human health.

He added that the Community Service and Environmental Development Sector offers comprehensive support—financial, technical, and marketing—to ensure the success of such projects. This is part of the university’s strategy to promote sustainable innovation and establish business incubators for young innovators.

The “Nabta” project aims to recycle banana waste by using the lower part of the tree (corm) to produce new seedlings and organic fertilizer. This reduces harmful waste in waterways while providing disease-resistant, cost-effective seedlings. The project also plans to offer tissue culture workshops as an additional income source.

With its competitive advantage of high quality, low cost, and farmer support services, “Nabta” primarily targets banana growers as well as ornamental and fruit plant enthusiasts. The team uses social media, agricultural exhibitions, and public relations for marketing. Although still new with a small customer base, the project has significant potential due to the abundance of banana waste and farmers’ need for practical innovative solutions.
