Prof. Mohamed Hussein announced that a multidisciplinary medical team at the New Surgery Hospital of Tanta University successfully ended the ordeal of a young girl who had swallowed a pin, which became lodged in an anatomically high-risk and complex position in her neck, through a precise surgical procedure that achieved complete success.
The case posed a significant medical challenge, as repeated attempts to locate the foreign object using gastrointestinal and thoracic endoscopy via the pharynx, esophagus, and trachea had failed. Advanced imaging with computed tomography revealed that the pin had penetrated the middle region of the neck on the left side, partially embedding in the left lobe of the thyroid gland.
Thanks to prompt intervention and coordination among medical departments, the surgical team was able to extract the pin with extreme precision using C-arm fluoroscopy. The complexity of the procedure necessitated the removal of the left thyroid lobe while meticulously preserving the recurrent laryngeal nerve, as well as the walls of the trachea and esophagus, without complications. Once the patient had fully regained consciousness and her vocal and motor functions were confirmed intact, she was transferred to the surgical intensive care unit for close monitoring until a complete recovery was achieved.
Prof. Mohamed Hussein, President of Tanta University, expressed his pride and admiration for this new medical achievement, which adds to the record of successes at the university hospitals. He emphasized that the successful completion of this complex operation clearly demonstrates the exceptional competence of Tanta University’s medical staff and serves as practical proof of the excellence of the New Surgery Hospital, equipped with the latest global technologies that made the difference in this delicate surgery. He highlighted that the operation represented a remarkable medical feat and an exceptional collaboration among specialists in gastrointestinal endoscopy, cardiothoracic surgery, general surgery, anesthesia, and ENT, working together in unison to save the patient’s life. Prof. Hussein reaffirmed the university’s ongoing commitment to developing the medical system and providing the highest standards of free healthcare to the region and all of Egypt.
The surgery was performed under the guidance of Prof. Mohamed Hantira, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the University Hospitals Board, with close supervision by Prof. Hassan Al-Tatawy, Executive Director of University Hospitals, and Prof. Ahmed Sweilem, Director of the University Hospital and New Surgery Hospital.
