Professor Mohamed Hussein, President of Tanta University, announced the successful completion of a new medical achievement by a specialized team from the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Tanta University Emergency Hospital. The team successfully performed a complete reattachment of an amputated hand for a 39-year-old patient through a highly delicate microsurgical procedure that lasted 12 consecutive hours.
Professor Hussein expressed his pride in this distinguished medical accomplishment, which adds to the record of successes achieved by the university hospitals. He emphasized that the success of this complex operation clearly reflects the exceptional competence and dedicated efforts of Tanta University's medical staff. He described the achievement as a true medical milestone and an outstanding example of interdisciplinary collaboration, demonstrating the ability of Tanta University Hospitals to manage the most critical and challenging cases. He further reaffirmed the university’s ongoing commitment to advancing its healthcare system, providing state-of-the-art technologies, and delivering the highest standards of free healthcare services to the people of the region and across Egypt.
Professor Mohamed Hantira explained that the patient was transferred to the Emergency Hospital by ambulance immediately following a traffic accident that resulted in the complete amputation of his hand. The case posed a significant medical challenge due to its severity and the limited time available to save the amputated limb, necessitating immediate intervention by the medical teams to conduct the required examinations and assessments.
The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine added that the complex surgical intervention involved preparing the amputated limb, stabilizing the bones, and subsequently reconnecting the arteries, veins, tendons, and nerves using advanced microsurgical techniques. He noted that the speed and precision of the surgical procedure were instrumental in successfully restoring blood circulation to the hand. The patient's condition remained stable following ten days of close postoperative monitoring, confirming the successful preservation of the amputated limb.
The surgery was carried out under the guidance of Professor Mohamed Hantira, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the University Hospitals Board, with close supervision from Professor Hassan El-Tatawy, Executive Director of the University Hospitals, and Professor Mohamed El-Shebeiny, Supervisor of the Emergency Departments. The procedure also benefited from the technical contributions of department heads, including Professor Wael Hussein, Head of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and Professor Sabry Amin, Head of the Department of Anesthesia, Surgical Intensive Care, and Pain Management.
The Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery team included Dr. Mamdouh Osama, Dr. Basel Younes, Dr. Ahmed Shakban, and Dr. Areej El-Sherif, with the participation of Dr. Sayed El-Gamsy from the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. Resident physicians Ahmed Sami Ashour, Mostafa Mohamed Nassar, and Ahmed Younes also contributed to the operation.
The anesthesia team consisted of Dr. Sara Abou El-Fotouh Shoman, Dr. Ibrahim El-Sayed El-Nefiawy, and resident physicians Mohamed Wadeh, Ahmed Eissa, Sara Fayed, Youssef Shaalan, and Saad Essam. The nursing team included Ahmed Abdel-Badie and Ahmed Dawoud.
In a related context, Professor Mohamed Hantira welcomed the medical team involved in the surgery to his office today. The meeting was attended by Professor Loay El-Ahwal, Vice Dean for Community Service and Environmental Development; Professor Mohamed Gaber, Vice Dean for Education and Student Affairs; Professor Mohamed El-Bedeawy, Vice Dean for Postgraduate Studies and Research; Professor Hassan El-Tatawy, Executive Director of the University Hospitals; Professor Mohamed El-Shebeiny, Supervisor of the Emergency Departments; and Professor Helmy Shalaby, Emeritus Professor of Plastic Surgery.
During the meeting, Professor Hantira extended his sincere appreciation and gratitude to the medical team, commending their daily dedication and sacrifices in saving patients’ lives. He affirmed that the development of medical departments remains a top priority for the Faculty’s administration and stressed the continuation of full institutional support, including the provision of all necessary supplies, modern equipment, and advanced microsurgical technologies. These efforts, he noted, are essential to sustaining the outstanding and distinguished performance that has established Tanta University Hospitals as a leading medical center in the Nile Delta region.
