Tanta University’s Faculty of Medicine inaugurated today the 40th edition of its annual scientific conference under the theme “University Hospitals: Between Challenges and the Future in the New Republic”. The event was held in the presence of Major General Ashraf El-Gendy, Governor of Gharbia; Tanta University President Prof. Mohamed Hussein Mahmoud; Prof. Omar Sherif Omar, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of University Hospitals; Prof. Ahmed Anany, Advisor to the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research for Health Policies and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Zagazig University; Prof. Hatem Amin, Vice President of Tanta University for Postgraduate Studies and Research; Prof. Ahmed Ghoniem, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Tanta University, Chairman of the University Hospitals Board, and Conference President; Prof. Mohamed Hantira, Vice Dean for Postgraduate Studies and Conference Vice President; Prof. Hassan El-Tatawy, Executive Director of Tanta University Hospitals and Conference Rapporteur; alongside Prof. Mohamed Mokhtar Mabrouk and Prof. Ragia Sherisher, the Conference Secretaries General. The event also witnessed the participation of the heads of the Medical and Journalists Syndicates in Gharbia and a large number of faculty members from various Egyptian medical faculties, representatives of the Ministry of Health, health insurance organizations, interns, and medical students.
In his address, Governor Ashraf El-Gendy expressed his pleasure in attending the conference, praising the vital role that medical faculties play in enhancing healthcare systems, advancing scientific research, and keeping pace with global medical developments. He also commended the efforts of the Faculty of Medicine and university hospitals in providing outstanding healthcare services to the residents of Gharbia and the surrounding region.
Tanta University President Prof. Mohamed Hussein welcomed attendees from various Egyptian universities and emphasized the pivotal role of university hospitals in delivering healthcare services to citizens. He highlighted the state's commitment to modernizing the performance of university hospitals through educational and training programs, interdisciplinary specialization, and digital transformation. He noted that Tanta University Hospitals have played a pioneering role in this regard, serving over 2 million patients in 2024. He extended his gratitude to Prof. Ahmed Ghoniem, the Executive Director of the hospitals, hospital directors, department heads, young doctors, and the nursing staff for their efforts.
Prof. Hussein also underscored the alignment of the university’s development plans with the national strategic framework led by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, aimed at enhancing healthcare infrastructure and human resources. He pointed to the university’s major projects, including the new Emergency Hospital, the Pediatric Surgery Hospital, and the digital transformation of its medical facilities.
Prof. Hatem Amin added that Tanta University Hospitals represent a national model of medical excellence, reflecting the university’s commitment to quality healthcare services for Gharbia and neighboring governorates. He emphasized the importance of continuous infrastructure development and technological upgrades in affirming the university’s leading medical status. He thanked all conference organizers and expressed hope for meaningful recommendations that contribute to enhancing healthcare in line with global standards.
Prof. Omar Sherif highlighted the vital role of university hospitals, which provide 76% of Egypt’s medical services. He noted that the conference addresses essential topics related to hospital management, education, and medical research, expressing his wishes for a successful and impactful event.
Prof. Ahmed Anany praised Tanta University as one of Egypt’s most prestigious institutions and reviewed the national plan initiated in 2014 to upgrade university hospitals, involving 160 projects with a total investment of EGP 15.5 billion. He pointed out the university’s specialized medical centers, including Chest and Surgical Hospitals, which have eased access to healthcare and reduced costs for patients.
In his speech, Prof. Ahmed Ghoniem stated that the conference reflects the Faculty’s role in societal service, medical advancement, and scientific research. He noted that this year’s conference includes 40 scientific sessions, four plenary panels, and 11 workshops across 40 well-equipped halls. He extended his gratitude to all organizers, participants, and partners, expressing hope that the conference fosters deeper academic collaboration.
The opening ceremony featured a documentary on the Faculty’s achievements and honored prominent faculty pioneers. Honorees included Prof. Mohamed Samih El-Shorbagi (Ophthalmology), Prof. Amal Hashish (General Surgery), Prof. Nagah Kamel Gaafar (Biochemistry), Prof. Faeqa El-Tatawy (Pathology), Prof. Magdy Salah Mousa (Ophthalmology), and Prof. Howaida Ismail (Vice Dean for Education and Student Affairs). Shields were presented to Governor Ashraf El-Gendy, Tanta University President Prof. Mohamed Hussein, Prof. Omar Sherif, Prof. Ahmed Anany, and Prof. Hatem Amin.
