Prof. Mohamed Hussein, President of Tanta University, announced that the university has achieved a remarkable advancement in the Webometrics Global Ranking for the July 2025 edition, ranking 1003 globally out of more than 31,000 ranked universities. This marks a progress of 370 places compared to the January 2025 edition, in which the university was ranked 1373.
At the regional level, the university maintained its position at rank 29 across the African continent, as well as its national rank of 11 among the 83 Egyptian universities listed in the ranking.
Prof. Mohamed Hussein affirmed that this achievement reflects the university's continuous efforts to enhance its academic and research standing both locally and internationally. He emphasized the university’s commitment to excellence across all fields, appreciating the sincere efforts and dedication of all university members—faculty, researchers, and administrative staff—for strengthening the university’s vision and online presence, increasing the quality and quantity of published research, and enhancing citations. He extended his thanks to the team at the Main Center for Digital and Knowledge Services, the E-Portal, the Media Center, and the International Ranking Unit for their ongoing efforts in improving the university website’s content and increasing external links to research and activities, which significantly boosted the university’s digital visibility.
The University President added that Tanta University will continue to exert more effort to improve its position in both global and regional rankings, in line with its vision to be a beacon of scientific research and quality education, and in recognition of its pivotal role in strengthening the university’s international reputation and standing.
It is worth noting that the Webometrics Ranking is the largest academic ranking of higher education institutions since 2004. It is conducted independently, objectively, freely, and openly every six months—at the end of January and July—by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). The ranking is based on key indicators, including:
Visibility (50%): measures the number of external networks linking to the institution’s web pages.
Excellence (40%): based on the number of top-cited papers, measuring the volume of research papers among the top 10% most cited in each of the 27 subject areas in the full Scimago database over the past five years.
Transparency or Openness (10%): measures the number of citations of the top 310 authors, excluding the top 20 outliers, based on Google Scholar data.
