Tanta University organized a grand celebration today to mark its leading position among Egyptian universities by successfully eradicating illiteracy for over 33,000 citizens in 2024. The event was attended by Prof. Mohamed Hussein, President of Tanta University; Prof. Mahmoud Selim, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development; Prof. Walid Hweila, representative of the General Authority for Adult Education; Prof. Mohamed Abu El-Nabil, Head of the Six Sector Branches at the Authority; along with deans, vice deans, faculty members, representatives of the National Alliance for Civil Development Work, Nour Misr Foundation, Misr Workers Complex, and university staff coordinating the literacy project in collaboration with the local branch of the Authority in Gharbia.
In his speech, Prof. Mohamed Hussein expressed pride in this distinguished achievement, stating that it reflects the university's deep commitment to its social and humanitarian mission. He emphasized that the university aspires to be a beacon of knowledge for all those seeking self and societal development.
Prof. Hussein also pointed out the university's efforts in achieving UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 – Quality Education – through promoting lifelong learning and societal empowerment. He praised the collaboration among faculty, students, and staff, and extended his gratitude to all partners who contributed to the initiative, especially Prof. Mahmoud Selim and the dedicated students and staff.
In his remarks, Prof. Mahmoud Selim congratulated Prof. Hussein on his presidential appointment and presented an overview of the university's ongoing contributions to national initiatives, including a detailed account of its pioneering role in literacy eradication over the years. He also announced the launch of the “Knowledge is Life” initiative, in collaboration with national partners, aimed at eliminating digital illiteracy and empowering newly literate citizens with future-ready tools and job opportunities.
Prof. Walid Hweila, delivering greetings from Prof. Eid Abdel Wahed, Head of the General Authority for Literacy and Adult Education, emphasized that illiteracy is a major social challenge and a barrier to development. He acknowledged the pivotal role played by Tanta University, which has helped nearly 175,000 individuals become literate, significantly reducing illiteracy in Gharbia and paving the way to declare it an illiteracy-free governorate.
