Prof. Mohamed Hussein, Tanta University President, announced a new international achievement for the university in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject 2026, as Tanta University was listed in 7 academic disciplines out of 11 main fields, compared to 6 disciplines in last year’s ranking. This reflects the expansion of academic excellence areas and qualitative progress in research performance.
Prof. Mohamed Hussein explained that this year’s ranking witnessed Tanta University’s first-ever inclusion in the field of Business and Economics, which covers sub-disciplines such as business administration, accounting and finance, economics, and econometrics. The university was ranked the 801–1000 band globally out of 1,067 universities, and placed in the third local tier among 8 ranked Egyptian universities in this field—an achievement that reflects the development of academic and research performance in economic and administrative sciences.
In the field of Medical and Health Sciences, which includes medicine, dentistry, and other health-related disciplines, Tanta University was ranked in the 801–1000 band globally out of 1,230 universities, placing it in the fifth local tier among 28 Egyptian universities. This highlights the strength of the university’s education and research systems in medical and health sciences.
In Computer Science, which is treated as a standalone discipline in the THE ranking, Tanta University was ranked within the 801–1000 band globally out of 1,165 universities, achieving the fifth local tier among 21 Egyptian universities—an indicator of growing research capacity in technological fields.
Prof. Mohamed Hussein added that the university achieved notable progress in Engineering, which includes general engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, mechanical and aerospace engineering, civil engineering, and chemical engineering. Tanta University advanced 100 positions globally compared to last year, ranking within the 501–600 band worldwide out of 1,555 universities, and securing the second local tier among 29 Egyptian universities—one of the most prominent achievements in this year’s ranking.
In Life Sciences, encompassing agriculture and forestry, biological sciences, veterinary medicine, and sports sciences, the university was ranked in the 601–800 band globally out of 1,211 universities, achieving the fourth local tier among 23 Egyptian universities.
In Physical Sciences, which include mathematics and statistics, physics and astronomy, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, geology, and marine sciences, Tanta University ranked within the 601–800 band globally out of 1,497 universities, and placed in the third local tier among 28 Egyptian universities.
Tanta University also maintained its presence in Social Sciences, which include media and communication, political science and international relations (including development studies), sociology, and geography. The university ranked within the 801–1000 band globally out of 1,202 universities, achieving the second local tier among 13 ranked Egyptian universities.
Prof. Mohamed Hussein emphasized that this expansion across disciplines reflects a significant leap in the quality of research performance and the strength of scientific citations by the university’s researchers. He extended his appreciation to Prof. Hatem Amin, Vice President for Graduate Studies and Research, praising the continuous follow-up and dedicated efforts that contributed to improving research output quality and increasing international publication rates. He affirmed that this success is the result of collective efforts across the university’s academic system, enhancing its global standing in line with Egypt Vision 2030 and the development of scientific research to serve national development priorities.
It is worth noting that the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2026 are based on a rigorous methodology using 18 performance indicators distributed across five main pillars: teaching, research environment, research quality and impact, industry income and knowledge transfer, and international outlook—ensuring fairness, accuracy, and comparability among universities worldwide.
