• Tanta University advances 114 positions in the 2026 SCImago ranking and remains within the global top quartile (Q1).
• Notable progress in subject-specific rankings in medicine, engineering, and agriculture at global, continental, and national levels.
Prof. Mohamed Hussein, President of Tanta University, announced that the university has achieved a new milestone in the SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) 2026. The university ranked 1458th globally out of 5,491 ranked institutions, advancing 114 positions compared to the previous year. It has maintained its position within the first quartile (Q1), reflecting sustained improvement in performance across research, innovation, and societal impact.
Furthermore, the ranking results indicated the university’s progress to 23rd place in Africa among 345 classified African universities, an increase of three positions from the previous year. Locally, the university achieved 10th place among 55 Egyptian universities included in the ranking, advancing one position from the prior year. These results underscore the growing prominence of the university both on the African continent and nationally.
Prof. Hussein emphasized that this achievement in the 2026 SCImago ranking is the result of an ambitious institutional strategy aimed at enhancing international competitiveness. He noted that the university’s advancement of 114 global positions, its continued placement in Q1, and its 10th-place national ranking are not merely numerical gains, but rather an international testament to the significant qualitative progress in research output, innovation capacity, and societal impact at Tanta University.
He further explained that such rankings serve as a “mirror reflecting the university’s position on the global academic map,” contributing directly to attracting international partnerships and foreign students, thereby strengthening the institution’s reputation. He extended his sincere appreciation to all faculty members and researchers across the university, describing them as the “cornerstone” of this achievement, owing to their contributions to high-quality publications in leading international journals and their commitment to rigorous scientific standards. He affirmed that scientific research is the engine of development, and that the university remains committed to providing full support and a stimulating environment for its researchers to sustain excellence and achieve global leadership befitting Egypt and Tanta University. He also expressed his gratitude to Prof. Hatem Amin, Vice President for Graduate Studies and Research, and the University Center for International Rankings.
Prof. Hatem Amin added that the SCImago ranking is based on three main criteria: research (50%), innovation (30%), and societal impact (20%), measured through a set of sub-indicators assessing scientific output quality, research excellence, academic leadership, international collaboration, innovation linked to patents, as well as societal and digital impact.
At the level of major academic fields, Tanta University achieved distinguished results across several disciplines. In medicine, it ranked 1196th globally, 18th in Africa, and 6th locally. In dentistry, it ranked 439th globally, 9th in Africa, and 6th locally, while in veterinary medicine, it ranked 468th globally, 26th in Africa, and 16th locally.
The university has also achieved strong performance in Environmental Sciences (ranked 1,269th globally, 20th in Africa, and 9th nationally), as well as in Agricultural and Biological Sciences (ranked 1,142nd globally, 17th in Africa, and 10th nationally). In engineering, it ranked 1483rd globally, 27th in Africa, and 12th locally.
The university has also achieved notable results in the fields of pharmacology, toxicology, and pharmacy, securing the 929th position globally, 28th in Africa, and 23rd nationally. In the field of energy, it ranked 1,387th globally, 30th in Africa, and 13th nationally. In mathematics, it attained the 1,695th position worldwide, 44th in Africa, and 16th nationally. These rankings reflect the university’s broad scientific and research foundation, as well as the diversity of its areas of excellence.
The university demonstrated strong performance across a number of specialized disciplines. In pediatrics, neonatology, and child health, it ranked 317th globally, 6th in Africa, 2nd in the Arab region, and 2nd locally—one of the institution’s most notable and distinguished achievements in this year’s rankings. In public, environmental, and occupational health, it placed 482nd globally, 9th in Africa, and 2nd locally. In nephrology, it ranked 338th globally, 6th in Africa, and 3rd locally. In ecology, evolution, behavior, and systematics, it achieved 469th globally, 7th in Africa, and 3rd locally. These results underscore the university’s strength in specialized fields with clear scientific and societal impact.
The university also attained advanced standings in several precise medical disciplines. In anatomy, it ranked 254th globally, 10th in Africa, and 4th locally. In pathology and forensic medicine, it placed 396th globally, 7th in Africa, and 4th locally. In ophthalmology, it ranked 351st globally, 6th in Africa, and 5th locally. In anesthesia and pain management, it achieved 407th globally, 7th in Africa, and 5th locally. In cardiovascular diseases, it ranked 767th globally, 12th in Africa, and 5th locally.
In other medical specialties, the university ranked 531st globally, 17th in Africa, and 5th locally in critical care medicine. In otorhinolaryngology (ENT), it placed 458th globally, 7th in Africa, and 5th locally. In oncology, it ranked 850th globally, 11th in Africa, and 6th locally. In obstetrics and gynecology, it achieved 711th globally, 44th in Africa, and 7th locally. In rheumatology, it ranked 427th globally, 9th in Africa, and 7th locally.
Within the agricultural and environmental sectors, the university recorded strong results. In animal sciences, it ranked 377th globally, 11th in Africa, and 9th locally. In aquatic sciences, it placed 451st globally, 20th in Africa, and 10th locally. In food sciences, it ranked 714th globally, 12th in Africa, and 7th locally. In plant sciences, it achieved 621st globally, 17th in Africa, and 11th locally. In soil sciences, it ranked 518th globally, 21st in Africa، and 10th locally.
In engineering and applied fields, the university achieved notable results as well. In mechanical engineering, it ranked 937th globally, 13th in Africa, and 8th locally. In marine and ocean engineering, it placed 468th globally, 14th in Africa, and 8th locally. In architecture, it ranked 693rd globally, 34th in Africa, and 15th locally. In biomedical engineering, it achieved 1442nd globally, 26th in Africa, and 18th locally.
The results also revealed a diverse academic and research presence for Tanta University across a range of other disciplines, including arts and humanities; biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology; chemistry; computer science; physics and astronomy; business administration and accounting; economics, econometrics, and finance; social sciences; education; and geography, planning, and development.
